— Raina Ferraro — a 2012 Chester Academy graduate who was a cheerleader, Girl Scout, and well-loved friend — needs the community's help.

The 19-year-old just earned her cosmetology certificate from the BOCES CTEC program. She was awaiting her license from New York State so that she could begin practicing her new skills. She is also enrolled full-time at Rockland Community College.

Raina has been in the hospital, suffering a very serious condition, since Jan. 10. During a routine endoscopy, she suffered cardiac arrest and was revived. However, she was deprived of oxygen for too long and suffered brain damage. She will have processing problems in her thinking.

She spent five weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital/Westchester Medical Center, and was recently transferred to a long-term rehabilitation hospital.

Her recovery will be filled with challenges, tests, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and therapy. She is currently in a long-term rehab facility. With that comes great expense not covered by insurance.

Anyone who wishes to lighten the Ferraro family's burden may join an upcoming fundraiser scheduled by the Raina Ferraro Fund Committee. The next event is a Tricky Tray benefit on April 13 at Glen Arden Continuing Care Retirement Community in Goshen. Doors open at 1 p.m. and calling begins at 2:30 p.m. Highlights include baskets, big ticket items, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and refreshments.

In addition, the Raina Ferraro Fund has been established here in Chester. Monetary contributions may be sent to:

TD Bank

Attn: Raina Ferraro Fund

78 Brookside Avenue

Chester, NY 10918

Anyone interested in attending the tricky tray or donating a basket should call Sandy Nagler at 845-781-0891 or email RainaFerraroFund@gmail.com.
