Goshen medical group raising diabetes awareness
GOSHEN — Horizon Family Medical Group wants your family healthy and has launched an effort to further raise awareness of diabetes among its patients, providers and staff.
Horizon’s awareness initiative kicked off in May with a Mother’s Day fundraising basket that included a voucher for services at a local wellness center. Funds raised were used to send a child to Camp Aspire in Rochester. The camp is a place where children with diabetes enjoy camaraderie, learning about their disease and fun. The balance of the funds were donated to the ADA Research Fund.
Horizon’s diabetes awareness-raising campaign will continue with a fundraising bowling event and a virtual walk in September. There will also be a continuing series of quarterly breakfasts and lunches done in conjunction with Shop Rite, where seniors will learn how to eat healthy and lower their diabetic risk.
Horizon’s efforts are part of the group’s participation in a nationwide campaign by the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) and the ADA entitled “Diabetes: Together 2 Goal.” The purpose of the campaign is to “improve the lives of 1 million people with Type 2 diabetes,” in three years, according to the AMGA.
Horizon Family, along with the Together 2 Goal, wants everyone to remember 80 percent of Type 2 diabetes is preventable with lifestyle changes, including getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, giving up smoking and lowering cholesterol, according to diabetes.co.uk.
Remember the benefits of walking: it helps with weight management, lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of heart attack, lowers cholesterol, etc., according to motiveweight.blogspot.com.
